A lovely Huntley & Palmers Burns Shortbread tin from 1954.
Tea caddy shaped tin, square with chamfered corners. Raised portrait on hinged lid of Robert Burns. Panels on sides showing Scottish scenes, all on red tartan background.
The scenes on the sides are of Edinburgh Castle, Loch Katrine, Stirling Castle and the Pass of Killiecrankie. The image of Burns is a copy of the famous portrait by Alexander Nasmyth, painted in 1787. The picture was painted after the success of Burns' 1786 edition of his poems. The portrait was commissioned by the publisher William Creech, to be engraved for a new edition of Burns' poems. Apparently Nasmyth never quite completed the portrait, preferring to leave it unfinished rather than take the risk of losing his likeness. This image was used on a Huntley & Palmers tin as far back as 1926.
It is 5" tall
In excellent condition.
